“A House Of Magic
”Parham House and Gardens are set in the heart of a medieval deer park at the foot of the South Downs, between Pulborough and Storrington. Parham has always been a well-loved family home, and only three families have lived here since the property was acquired by Robert Palmer, a London mercer following the Dissolution of the Monasteries.The foundation stone of the Palmer’s new house was laid by the two year old Thomas Palmer in 1577- it was considered a sign of good luck for the youngest member of the household to perform this duty. It is reputed Queen Elizabeth dined at Parham and her coat of arms were later painted in plaster on the wall of the impressive Great Hall.The most spectacular room in the house is the Long Gallery which stretches 160 feet and is the third longest in England.
Parham was bought by the Hon.Clive Pearson in 1922 . He and his wife, together with their daughter, Veronica Tritton then spent more than 60 years carefully restoring the house and filling it with a sensitively chosen collection of furniture, paintings and textiles and needlework. Today, Parham is the home of Mr James and Lady Emma Barnard, the Pearson’s great- granddaughter. The delightful four-acre 18th century walled garden has been transformed over the last 25 years into an oasis of colourful mixed herbaceous borders, vegetable garden, herb garden and orchard, together with a 1920’s Wendy house. Flowers from the garden have traditionally been used to decorate the rooms in the house for visitors to enjoy. The adjoining Pleasure Grounds include a lake, many specimen trees and a brick and turf maze.
The Park is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and the fallow deer which still roam within it are descendents of the original herd first recorded in 1628. Parham’s peace and timeless beauty have changed little over the centuries.
