National Museums of Scotland online: information and bookings

National Museums Scotland care for many of Scotland’s museum collections of national and international importance, and each year welcome over 1.3 million visitors to their five museums throughout Scotland.

• The National Museum of Scotland is made up of two iconic buildings. At the Museum of Scotland building you will discover thousands of the nation’s most precious artefacts, as well as everyday objects, which throw light on Scotland through the ages. The Royal Museum building, with its magnificent glass ceiling, houses remarkable international collections of decorative arts, science, industry, archaeology and the natural world. What’s more, admission to these two museums is free.

• At the National War Museum, within the spectacular setting of Edinburgh Castle, explore over 400 years of Scottish Military experience. Uncover stories of courage and determination, victory and defeat, heroics and heartbreak. Entrance is included in admission to the Castle.

• At the National Museum of Flight in East Lothian, explore fascinating aviation collections, find out how flight has changed our world, and see supersonic icon, Concorde G-BOAA in The Concorde Experience. Why not upgrade your experience with a pre-booked tour onboard Scotland’s Concorde? Open daily, Easter to October, and weekends only, November to Easter.

• The National Museum of Rural Life is a fantastic working farm and museum in East Kilbride. Find out what life was like for country people in the past and how this has influenced the countryside of today. Enjoy a great day out exploring the award-winning exhibition building, Georgian farmhouse and 1950s farm, complete with dairy cows, hens, horses and sheep.

• There’s always plenty to do at Shambellie House, a beautiful country house museum in Dumfries, home to the National Museum of Costume, whether it’s seeing what you would have worn in a bygone age or having a picnic in the grounds. Open Easter to October.
