Severn Valley Railway online: information and bookings
The Severn Valley Railway has been delighting visitors with its much-loved mix of historic attractions, stunning scenery and great events for 50 years.
This year, the famous Railway, which runs along a scenic, 16-mile span from Kidderminster in Worcestershire to Bridgnorth in Shropshire, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its formation.
Back in July 1965, a dedicated group of young railway enthusiasts gathered in their local pub and decided to re-open the line, which was closed in 1963. Five years later, the Railway opened for public passenger services once again – and the rest is history.
More than 200,000 visitors now flock to the SVR each year to enjoy exciting steam train rides through the stunning Severn Valley Countryside.
Visitors are able to stop-off at any of the six, beautifully-restored stations en-route and explore anything from Kidderminster Railway Museum to the picturesque Severn Valley Country Park.
The SVR’s Engine House Visitor Centre at Highley is packed to the rafters with interactive exhibits, including a new 50th Anniversary exhibition - taking people on a journey through the Railway’s first half-century - as well as a reserve collection of full-size steam locomotives, King George VI Royal Carriage and a range of railway artefacts and memorabilia.
The Flag & Whistle Food Stop at The Engine House offers the ideal opportunity to enjoy a meal while enjoying panoramic views of the rolling countryside, and the licensed Valley Suite at Kidderminster is the ideal place to relax and enjoy dishes like its famous cooked breakfast.
Those looking for a truly indulgent dining experience can enjoy a meal on-board the SVR’s luxurious dining carriages while admiring the views as they travel along the line and couples looking for a memorable place to get married can now tie the knot at the Railway, making their special day one to remember.
Visitors looking for a day out with a difference at the Railway can enjoy any of its varied range of special events, including 1940s Weekends, Sounds of the 60s, Spring and Autumn Steam Galas, Classic Vehicle Day, Ladies Day and the ever-popular Santa Steam Specials.
The Railway is open every weekend, and opens daily from May-September and during school holidays. It is closed for essential maintenance from January 3rd, re-opening for February half-term.
