Berkeley Castle online: information and bookings

This beautiful and historic Castle, begun in 1154, still remains the home of the famous family who gave their name to numerous locations all over the World, notably Berkeley Square in London, Berkeley Hundred in Virginia and Berkeley University in California.

Scene of the brutal murder of Edward II in 1327, visited by Elizabeth I in the 16th century and besieged for the last time in 1645, the Castle is steeped in history. The state apartments contain magnificent collections of furniture, tapestries and rare paintings, primarily by English and Dutch masters. Part of the famous Berkeley silver is on display in the dining room. Many other rooms are equally interesting, particularly the Great Hall where discussions may have been held before going to Runnymede to force King John to put his seal to Magna Carta in 1215.

Just off the A38, less than 20 miles from Bristol and Gloucester, Berkeley is England’s oldest castle still inhabited by the family which built it. Since 1153 twenty four generations of Berkeleys have transformed a savage Norman fortress into a comfortable family home full of treasures and history.

The Castle is surrounded by sweeping lawns and terraced gardens including the walled kitchen garden, where there are a stunning Tropical Butterfly House, plant centre, gift shop and Yurt Restaurant.
