Alnwick Garden online: information and bookings
The Alnwick Garden – one of the great wonders of the contemporary gardening world – has become a stunning success and seeks to offer an excellent resource for study, learning and exploration.
Officially opened by HRH The Prince of Wales in September 2002, this magnificent new garden in Northumberland has so far attracted over 1 million people from Britain and abroad.
Millions more have witnessed The Garden’s incredible creation through frequent television, radio and press coverage.
As the third most visited garden in the UK after Kew and Wisley, few other new gardens can rival the scale and ambition of the vision for The Alnwick Garden.
The centrepiece is the Grand Cascade, a magnificent tumbling mass of water, ending in an eruption of fountains sending 350 litres of water six metres into the air every second.
A computer system synchronises four sensational displays that offer not only a visual treat but more interactive enjoyment too for younger visitors who can play among the water jets.
Beyond the Grand Cascade lies the Ornamental Garden, a symmetrical, structured garden with a strong European influence, using box and yew.
There are places to sit and catch the sun with inviting doorways onto flowerbeds brimming with more than 16,500 plants.
To the right of the Cascade is the Rose Garden, a mix of pergola lined paths and grassy walkways covered in climbing and shrub roses mixed with glorious clematis and honeysuckle – the scent is heavenly. Among over 180 rose varieties in The Garden is the rose Alnwick Castle, launched at Chelsea in 2001.
Joining The Garden this year will be one of the largest wooden tree houses in the world with an amazing elevated restaurant and three new gardens. There’s the Serpent Garden, with a wonderful array of water features and topiary, the Bamboo Labyrinth and the Poison Garden, full of mystery and intrigue.
Designed by the renowned Belgian father and son company, Wirtz International, The Garden is the vision of the Duchess of Northumberland.
