Maidstone, the county town of Kent, has a rich and diverse history shaped by battles, revolts and mad priests, and later by industrialists, brewers and Victorian benefactors. Situated between London and Dover, the town was a main route for pilgrimages and has been a bustling trade centre for centuries, focusing along the River Medway. Despite many changes throughout the centuries, the ambience of old Maidstone can still be captured when walking through the town.

Maidstone Museum and Bentlif Art Gallery is one of the most important museums in the South East. Highlights include the 2,500 year old Egyptian mummy and Maidstone’s oldest resident, an Iguanodon. Discover fascinating local history - from toffees to cricket balls - and one of the finest collections of Japanese art in the country. Further collections include archaeology, ceramics, medieval, costume and natural history, alongside the splendour of the Queen’s Own Royal West Kent regimental museum.

One of Maidstone’s hidden gems is the Tyrwhitt-Drake Museum of Carriages. Located in the medieval stables of the Archbishops’ Palace, this wonderful collection of vehicles from royal state carriages to horse-drawn sleighs offers an intriguing visit.

Around the town there is a treasure trove of historic sites waiting to be discovered along with many significant attractions in the wider area. Not to be missed is Leeds Castle, described as ‘the loveliest castle in the world’. Take a river boat trip along the Medway to explore Kent Life, an historic farm attraction with 28 acres of fun for the whole family.

At the heart of the Garden of England, Maidstone is surrounded by oasts, vineyards, orchards and hop fields and picturesque villages. The countryside is quintessential Tudor England and there is a range of delightful accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets. Maidstone is the ideal place to enjoy a refreshing and relaxing short break or as a base from which to explore and tour the whole county.
