Fountains Abbey estate is owned by the National Trust and is a World Heritage Site.

It is unique for its stunning designed landscape, culminating in a spectacular view of the ruins of Fountains Abbey. The extensive remains of Fountains Abbey, founded in 1132 and dissolved in 1539 by Henry VIII, represent an outstanding testimony to Cistercian life and architecture, including a well-preserved 12th century mill and precinct wall.

Studley Royal Water Garden was created in the 18th century by the Aislabie family in the beautiful setting of the Skell valley, in Yorkshire. The designed landscape includes a rare surviving example of a formal Georgian water garden of ponds, hedges, statues and temples organised around contrived vistas, and a deer park landscaped with long vistas and avenues.

The estate also features two other major historic buildings: Fountains Hall (built in 1598-1604), an elegant mansion of Elizabethan style, and St Mary’s Church (built in 1871-78), a masterpiece of the Gothic Revival designed by the famous architect William Burges.

The combination of so many historic features, so well integrated into the landscape, is exceptional, and is why the estate has a World Heritage Site status.
