Ferniehirst Castle online: information and bookings
Ferniehirst is a rare example of a Border castle, still inhabited, with features surviving from the 15th and 16th centuries. Scotland's Frontier Fortress, this is the Ancestral home of Clan Kerr.
The undercroft of the original stone building of 1460 has survived these long centuries. Now housing the Clan Kerr display. Look out for the 3 Kerr mullets that feature on their heraldic devices, you will find them literally set in stone on the floor of this chamber. The Kerrs adopted their motto Sero Sed Serio (Late but in Earnest) after the Battle of Ancrum Moor in 1545 when the Kerr cavalry finally routed the English armies of Henry VIII. A helmet found on Ancrum Moor is displayed in the chamber along with tartans, weaponry, family trees, heraldry and photographs of the family. A must-see room for all associated with Clan Kerr.
Enjoy the beautiful woodland walks. Sir Walter Scott came here in 1803 accompanied by his two friends, the poets, William Wordsworth and Dorothy Wordsworth who described how she waded up to her waist in ferns in 'the solitary valley of the Jed under Ferniehirst'
