Port Eliot online: information and bookings
Port Eliot is an ancient and hidden gem and was only very recently opened to the public. Port Eliot House is set in stunning fairytale grounds and nestles beside a secret estuary in South East Cornwall. It has the rare distinction of being a Grade I listed park and garden. This is due in part to the work of Sir John Soane, who worked his magic on the house and Humphrey Repton, who created the magnificent Park and garden.
Port Eliot is a very ancient site, with the house beginning life as an Augustinian Priory. It has been in continuous occupation for more than 1000 years and home to the Eliot family for 500. Port Eliot is the family home of the Earl and Countess of St Germans, and their whippets Roo and Lark. It is not your average Stately home, but has a fabulous atmosphere engendered by rooms like the Morning Room with it’s eighteenth century raspberry red French damask covered walls, an accumulation of wonderful treasures such as a rare Gesso Marriage Chest and a museum quality Boule armoire, (which houses Lord St German’s record collection) alongside works by Van Dyck, Reynolds, Hoppner and Ramsey. The famous Round Room is considered to be Sir John Soane’s masterpiece and it is fitting that it now houses the greatest work of Plymouth artist Robert Lenkiewicz, his ‘Riddle Mural’.
Take time to walk by the St Germans estuary and meander through the woodland garden. In the spring the rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and spring bulbs burst into life. Picnic wherever you like, by the maze with its stunning views of the estuary and Brunel’s viaduct or in the formal Orangery garden. Bring your dog and let it off the lead in the park on Dog Friendly Wednesday’s.
Each year the Big Dining Room sheds new light on the hidden treasures of Port Eliot when a tableau is created by Lady St Germans and Michael Howells (the highly acclaimed set designer to John Galliano and Mario Testino, and creative director of the Ballet Rambert).
