Kilkenny Castle online: information and bookings
Kilkenny Castle has been standing for over eight hundred years, dominating Kilkenny city and the south-east of Ireland. It was originally built as the symbol and reality of Norman control in the area, and it has continued throughout the many different periods of Irish history to symbolise the fortunes of one of the most powerful Irish families, The Butlers of Ormonde.
The Butler Family – Dukes, Marquesses and Earls of Ormonde, bought the Castle in 1391 and it was to be their principal seat until 1935. They were a remarkable family, resilient, politically astute and faithful to the Crown and to Ireland after their fashion. When the Butlers prospered, Kilkenny Castle was rebuilt and redecorated; when they fell from grace, it became run-down and dilapidated.
Today, it is in state care and set in extensive parkland. Two wings of the Castle have been restored to their nineteenth century splendour.
The final phase of restoration is now complete and includes the medieval South Tower and a conference centre. The river wing also houses the Butler Gallery – a modern art gallery.
