American Museum online: information and bookings
The American Museum in Britain is perched high on a hillside overlooking the Limpley Stoke valley nestled within 130 acres of spectacular grounds and parkland against stunning views on the edge of Bath. Since 1961 this has been the only dedicated museum of Americana outside the United States celebrating the development of American decorative arts. However, the museum also traces the American way of life through the ages with an array of spectacularly furnished period rooms. Many of these rooms are fitted with original panelling and floorboards brought from houses in the United States and furnished with fine examples of American furniture and decorative art. They extend in date from the late seventeenth century to the eve of the Civil War, and in cultural tradition from the English Puritans to the Spanish colonists of New Mexico.
The museum boasts stunning grounds and gardens which include three exhibits: a colonial kitchen garden with a dye-plant border, a replica of part of George Washington’s garden at Mount Vernon, and an arboretum devoted to American trees and shrubs. There are also two breathtaking walking trails, which are a must.
Throughout the summer months the museum is host to a number of groups who will demonstrate a variety of events and lifestyles from America’s past. The collections and exhibitions change regularly so there is always something new to see.
Other enchanting areas of the museum include the much-loved permanent attraction of the American quilt collection and the galleries which have special exhibits devoted to Shakers and Pennsylvania-Germans.
Further attractions include outdoor displays, children’s events, workshops, a herb shop and country store.
The American Museum in Britain has everything that anyone - from children to grandparents - could possibly desire for a memorable day out which will leave them with the feeling that they have been part of the American culture!
