FULL STEAM AHEAD
After over two years in the repair shop the Royal Scot replica steam locomotion has returned to the tracks of the mile and a half long miniature railway set alongside the River Ure in the beautiful gardens at Newby Hall.
This has been a labour of love which started nearly four years ago when David Driffield, who runs the miniature railway operation at Newby, discovered serious wear and tare on parts of the engine. After a full examination David realised that a full refit was required and specialist help would be needed. Hundreds of hours of repair and assembly work was carried out locally by Mike Stabbins working alongside companies who specialise in producing parts for wheel tyres, boiler parts, clupets, rings and pistons.
The work started by stripping down the engine and cleaning every nut and bolt of 50 years of oil and grime. A further challenge for Mike was the lack of any original plans for the 1953 engine which was built by Stanley Battison of Ilkleston as a 1/5th scale replica of the original Royal Scot. Purely by chance the team stumbled across Stanley’s daughter who provided invaluable information and eight months in to the rebuild some original drawings of Stanley’s engine were found at an engineering show.
Finally work by Ripon Paint and Body and sign writing by Karen Dodds have returned the Royal Scot to its former glory. The Royal Scot will once again run alongside The Countess De Grey and The Lady Mary Vyner, two diesel type class 52 locomotives.
