Inveraray Castle online: information and bookings

The present Inveraray Castle and Town of Inveraray date from the middle of the 18th century. The 3rd Duke of Argyll succeeded to the title in 1743 and embarked on the complete rebuilding of the Castle – the old 15th century Castle was situated some 100 metres to the North – and the moving and reconstruction of the new Town of Inveraray as part of his ‘grand conception’. The Royal Burgh of Inveraray is one of the earliest and best preserved planned towns in Scotland.

Inveraray is situated about 60 miles North-West of Glasgow on the A83 Trunk Road and is one of the most important tourist centres in the West of Scotland. It makes an ideal base for exploring the whole of the South Western and Mid Western Highlands and close by there are interesting and varied visitor attractions including Inveraray Jail, Ardkinglas and Crarae Gardens, Auchindrain, Wildlife Park and Cruachan Hydro-Electric Power Station.

Inveraray Castle was designed by Roger Morris and is amongst the earliest examples of Gothic revival architecture in Britain.
Built of local greenish blue chloritic schist stone, it is a most impressive ediface complementing the grandeur of the surrounding country.

The superintending architect of the early work, which began in 1745, was William Adam who was succeeded in 1748 by his son John. The elaborate decoration of the State Rooms was designed by Robert Mylne and executed between 1772 and 1789. The pitched and conical roofs were added after a fire in 1877 to the design of A. Salvin in the time of the 8th Duke of Argyll.

The visitor to the Castle may see a fine collection of family pictures and superb French tapestries set in painted rooms of outstanding beauty.
The Armoury Hall alone contains some 1300 pieces. Scottish and Continental furniture, English and Continental china and family artefacts form part of a unique collection spanning the generations which are identified by a genealogical display in the Clan Room.

Inveraray Castle is above all the family home of the Duke of Argyll.
