One of the World’s Great Gardens situated 20 miles south of Dublin City Centre in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains. The name Powerscourt derives from ‘de la Poer’ which was the name of the Norman family who built a castle here around 1300. In 1603 King James I of England granted the lands and castle to one of his generals, Sir Richard Wingfield, along with the title of Viscount Powerscourt.
The Wingfield family lived at Powerscourt for the next three centuries and built the present house and created the world famous gardens which stretch out over 45 acres. They are a sublime blend of formal gardens, sweeping terraces, statuary and ornamental lakes together with secret hollows, rambling walks, walled gardens and over 200 variations of trees and shrubs. Special features of the Gardens are the Japanese Garden, the Pepperpot Tower Folly, the Herbaceous border and the extensive range of roses.
A fire gutted the 18th century Palladian House in 1974 and it lay derelict for over 20 years. It re-opened in 1997 with an innovative new use for the shell of this great mansion, incorporating a terrace cafe, speciality shops and an audio visual history of the House and Gardens.
5km from the formal Gardens is Ireland’s Highest Waterfall which has been a favourite family picnic spot for years. It was here that Lord Powerscourt introduced the first Japanese Sika deer to Ireland. Their descendants can often still be seen at dusk or early in the morning around the Waterfall area.
