There has been a church at this site since the 13th century. Much of its history is linked with Chawton House, the home of the Knight family for some 400 years. This family adopted Edward, brother of Jane Austen, thus beginning the connection between Jane Austen and Chawton.

Inside the church are many architectural treasures. Jane Austen's mother and sister are buried in the church yard.
