Cuckoo's Hollow was originally an area of pastureland in summer surrounded by dykes on all sides and in winter it flooded. In the late 1970's the Peterborough Development Corporation redesigned the area. The site was excavated to create the lake and shape the site. The lake and its margins are an important wildlife habitat within the area. The margins attract birdlife such as water rails, warblers and bunting and provide nesting habitats for ducks, swans and coots.
