Escape to the country to take in the sights, smells and sounds of a 1950s working farm, complete with dairy cows and sheep. Explore the seasons from ploughing fields to sowing seeds, hay making to harvesting.

The Museum exhibition building links the past with the present and explains how agriculture and country life still has a significant role in all our lives today. Three main galleries, Land, People and Tools use objects, illustrations, text and multi-media to tell the story of Scottish country life from c.1750 onwards.

In these galleries you can explore the impact of man on the rural landscape – how people gradually gained ‘command' over the land, initially aided, they believed, by their superstitions, then latterly by employing scientific means. Discover how people lived though hardship and dearth and find out how tools and technology have led to ever increasing outputs and a dramatic change to the rural landscape of today.

The museum also has a large collection of tractors and combine harvesters all of which are easily accessible and Study Stores where objects not on display can be viewed and research carried out. In addition there is a picture gallery displaying 19 th century oil paintings of domestic animals, a theatre, education centre, café and shop.

A partnership between the National Museums of Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland.
