Thornbury Castle Hotel online: information and bookings

A magnificent 500-year-old Tudor castle-palace set in historic gardens and parkland, Thornbury Castle promises memories - memories of its royal past and also memories of the future.

The building of Thornbury Castle in 1511 by Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, ended in 1521 when the Duke was executed on fabricated charges of treason. In 1535 King Henry VIII and his second wife Anne Boleyn, stayed here. Henry’s daughter, Princess Mary, later Queen Mary 1st also lived here for several years.

Today, this Tudor castle stands serenely in 15 acres, with the oldest Tudor gardens in England, a beautiful vineyard and over the high castle walls, views of the hills over South Gloucestershire and Wales. There is fascinating historical detail to enjoy in every aspect of the castle - coats of arms, grand suits of armour, intricate oriel windows, and ornate carved ceilings which all enhance the wealth of the past, combined with the luxury and comfort of one of England’s finest hotels.

There are three dining rooms all of which have real fireplaces, fine pictures, elegant tableware and leaded windows. Using the finest ingredients, growing our own herbs and vegetables, and wine from our own vineyard, food at the Castle has received many accolades.

There are 25 carefully restored bedchambers, some with four-poster or coronet beds, tapestries and roaring fires. All rooms are extremely comfortable with lavish bathrooms and are luxuriously warm.

The Castle provides a wonderful retreat from everyday routine and also a memorable setting.
