Samarès Manor dates to Norman times. Its extensive grounds provide a unique setting for an internationally renowned herb garden which contains hundreds of culinary, medicinal and fragrant plants, organised and labelled according to use. Talks on herbs and their uses take place each weekday morning.

The gardens were originally designed and constructed in the 1920s by wealthy shipping line owner, Sir James Knott, who recognised that the grounds of the Manor offered very special environmental conditions and potential for growing plants from all over the world: the Japanese Garden, rock and water gardens, formal gardens, large ponds with islands and camellia plantations are the result of his passion. In recent years, the survival of this unique horticultural site has required a massive programme of restoration, development and diversification.

Samarès Manor’s plant centre specialises in unusual plants – a paradise for the keen gardener – and the Herb Shop stocks a wide range of a wide range of products with a gardening theme.

There are also tours of the manor house, a new rural life and carriage museum, and children can enjoy the Super Sleuth Nature Trail. The Herb Garden Café provides light lunches and snacks using a plentiful supply of herbs from the garden.

Why not enjoy a relaxing holiday at Samarès Manor. It has its own self-catering holiday accommodation – three farmhouse apartments and three cottages; the largest of which can accommodate up to eight adults and three children.
