From its commanding position in the Royal Park at Greenwich, Wren’s Royal Observatory building still sends out its daily time signal as the red ball signals 1 o’clock precisely, a daily routine since 1833. Inside compare the 17th-century intricacy of Harrison’s famous marine timekeepers with the modern astronomy displays; outside, the grand historical vista of the College, Chapel, Queen’s House and Observatory contrast with the rising glass towers of modern Docklands just across the river.
Leisurely river cruises or the modern Docklands Light Railway bring you from Central London right into the heart of Greenwich where the beautiful clipper ship Cutty Sark recalls past means of trade with China and Australia. Nearby Greenwich Gateway visitor centre introduces the World Heritage Site, the birthplace of Henry VIII, Mary Tudor and Elizabeth I. The Painted Hall of the Old Royal Naval College is a masterpiece by Thornhill and the delightful interior of the College Chapel provides space for reflection.
Focal point of the grand vista is the Queen’s House (Inigo Jones 1635), now a gallery for the art collections of the National Maritime Museum. The modern interior of the Museum itself dramatically presents themes that show how Britain benefited from its maritime connections. Here features on ocean liners, the environment, exploration and trade between nations present many rich and interesting stories.
Take a walk through the Park’s tree-lined avenues and enjoy its open spaces, formal gardens, boating pool and deer sanctuary. On its perimeter are the Ranger’s House (English Heritage) housing Wernher’s eclectic collection and the unique Fan Museum. The busy town centre has a covered market place and numerous book and antique shops. At the end of the day the theatres, cafes and riverside pubs provide a place to relax and maybe inspire new writers as they did Pepys and Dickens in past times.
