Wycombe District

Wycombe District is at the centre of the Chilterns and Thames Valley area – officially an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The district stretches south to the river Thames at Marlow and north to the highest point in the Chilterns at Coombe Hill, beyond Princes Risborough.

High Wycombe, the largest town in Buckinghamshire has a wide Georgian High Street, dominated at its western end by the Guildhall where Benjamin Disraeli, who lived at Hughenden Manor nearby, addressed his public meetings. The Little Market House, known locally as the Pepperpot, built by Robert Adam is also situated here. Nearby lies the Rye, a wide expanse of grassland bordered by a lake and a Nature Trail through hanging beechwoods.Princes Risborough lies in the lee of the Chiltern Hills forming a glorious backdrop with Whiteleaf Cross marking the route of the Ridgeway Path. This small market town is an ideal centre from which to explore the hundreds of miles of way-marked trails through the hills. For walkers, this area is one of the best in the country. The oldest part of the town is around the parish church of St Mary.

Marlow is a pretty Georgian Thames-side town famous for its 19th century suspension bridge and a fine High Street lined with tempting specialist shops. Many of the town’s buildings are of architectural and historical interest with a number of famous writers having lived and worked in the town – the poet Shelley and his wife Mary, T. S. Eliot and Jerome K. Jerome.
