Mid Bedfordshire
Rural Mid Bedfordshire is an area of gently rolling countryside peppered with woodland, heath and parkland. Amongst the rural landscape sit many picturesque villages and hamlets of stone and thatch – the quintessential England!
Our fine market towns are small but steeped with history and tradition and come complete with a tale or two of old! The Georgian town of Ampthill overlooks the Vale of Bedford and is edged by landscaped parkland that was once a favourite hunting ground of Henry VIII. The town is a must for those who have an interest in antiques and pine furnishings; The estate village of Woburn is noted for its architecture and ambience as well as its links to the nobility being the home of the Dukes of Bedford; The towns of Biggleswade and Sandy were once centres for market gardening and can still boast of good quality local produce.
Biggleswade still bears the signs of its former importance during the stagecoach era with its old style buildings set around the market square. Whilst Sandy, can trace its origins back to Roman times as recent excavations have revealed.
Mid Bedfordshire is noted for its unique and unusual attractions which range from vintage transport museums to wildlife centres, from ornamental gardens to a grand country house or two. These include the renowned Woburn Abbey and Safari Park, the magic of the Swiss Gardens, the splendour of Wrest Park Gardens, the Shuttleworth Vintage Aircraft Museum which stage spectacular flying displays throughout the summer and many more.
Complementing the many of places of interest found here is a network of footpaths and bridleways ideal for those who enjoy time out in the great outdoors or take pleasure in one of many typical country pursuits including riding, cycling, rambling, touring or golf.
