Historic Leicestershire, Leicestershire, England
Leicestershire encompasses all that is precious about the heart of England. There is a wealth of beautiful countryside ranging from the secluded valleys and rocky summits of Charnwood Forest to the sweeping slopes and far off horizons of the Wolds.
This is a county where timeless villages really do exist and market towns actually live up to the name. There are also some of the most tranquil and scenic sections of waterway in Britain.
Above all Leicestershire is a place to relax and unwind.
The country is also steeped in history and rich in heritage. Bradgate Park contains the ruins of Bradgate House, birthplace of Lady Jane Grey, the tragic Nine Day Queen of England. Ashby Castle was under siege for over a year during the Civil War and later inspired the famous tournament scene in Sir Walter Scott’s novel ‘Ivanhoe’.
Bosworth Battlefield is a special place, for the course of English history was changed foreve when the armies of Richard III and Henry Tudor clashed here, the turbulent medieval period came to an end and the prosperous Tudor era began. Bosworth Battlefield has an award winning Visitor Centre, which includes artefacts from the Mary Rose, and a well interpreted Battle Trail. A re-enactment of the Battle of Bosworth takes place annually.
Narrowboats on the Ashby Canal and steam trains on the Battlefield Railway offer trips from the edge of the Battlefield.
