Drumlanrig Castle
Dumfries & Galloway is a vast, largely undiscovered region in the south west where the small indigenous population finds itself greatly outnumbered by sheep. Bordering England, Galloway has seen turbulence and cross border raids and, until quite relatively recent times, was deemed quite lawless. Things have changed now, of course, and the various American connections include the birthplace of John Paul Jones at Arbigland, where the coastal waters of the Solway Firth no doubt inspired the founder of the US Navy.
Dumfries & Galloway has a prevailing mildness which allow cabbage palms, tree ferns and other spectacular species to flourish at Logan Botaninc Garden in the Rhins of Galloway. The coastline is warmed by the Atlantic waters of the Gulf Stream.
Caerlaverock Castle, near Dumfries and the ancient fortress of Threave Castle are well worth a visit and, if your passing through Laurieston, you’ll not find a better resting place for a high tea or typical Scottish fayre than at Elphinstone’s Buttery.
